Port Kembla attracts diversified cargoes with new infrastructure and flexible packages. In a state market dominated by the capital city port, Port Kembla continues to woo shippers with the flexibility and features which only a regional port can offer. In the financial year to June 1997, it completed it's second best year ever with a throughput of 26.5 million tonnes, just short of the record in 1993-94. One of the Port's main attractions is the generous amount of greenfield space - some 80 hectares, counting the inner and outer harbour, which the Port Corporation is preparing for major growth. It is well positioned to take advantage of industrial, agricultural and mining development in areas to the west and south - west of Sydney as well as rural NSW. A recent road transport survey showed that Port Kembla has both travel time and cost advantage over both Newcastle and Sydney Ports. The Port provides a 24 hour service, which means minimum delays from congestion and shipping movements are facilitated by short channels, no more than a few nautical miles from berth to the open sea. With a small, close knit management team, the Kembla Port Corporation is able to offer customers a level of service and flexibility which larger ports can only envy. |
